What are the key components of a Sewing Machine?

Belt – The belt transfers the rotation motion of the motor to other moving components of the sewing machine.

Bobbin – The bobbin holds the thread that sews the underside of the material being sewn by the sewing machine.

Bobbin Case – The bobbin case holds the bobbin and allows for the thread to be guided such that it can be picked up by the needle when the sewing machine is running.

Feed Dog – The feed dogs move below the needle plate to advance the fabric being sewn. The feed dogs rise above the needle plate with a rearward movement to push the fabric as it is sewn.

Foot Pedal – The foot pedal is a variable switch that controls the speed of the sewing machine.

Needle – The needle passes the thread through the material being sewn.

Needle Plate – The Needle Plate supports the fabric directly above the lower bobbin as well as allowing for the feed dogs and needle to pass through the needle plate. The needle plate is also reffered to as the throat plate.

Power Cord – The Power Cord provides electricity to the sewing machine.

Presser Foot – The presser foot applies pressure to the fabric being sewn. This allows the movement of the feed dog to cause the fabric to move as the needle is moved up and down by the sewing machine.

Presser Foot Lever – The Presser Foot Lever engages the presser foot.

Spool Pins – The Spool Pins hold the large spool of thread on top of the machine. The spool pins provide support and allow the spool to spin as the thread is consumed.

Thread Guides– The Thread Guides provide a path for the upper thread to pass from the spool to the needle.
